Russell's Proportion post

Part 1 :

  •  Ratio : 2 or more quantities that have the same unit measurement are compared to each other.

e.g.

  • Rate : 2 quantities that have different unit measurements are compared to each other.

e.g.

  • Proportion : A way of saying that 2 ratios are equivalent.

e.g.

Part 2 :

1. 5 hours to travel 360 kilometers is about _____km/h.
First, we have to divide the numerator by the denominator. 360 divided by 5 = 72. What we do to one side, we have to do to the other. So 5 divided by 5 = 1.  Our answer is 72 km/h.

2. Emma saves 28 cents of every dollar that she earns.  Emma earned $75 last week.  How much money did Emma save last week?

First, we have to multiply the numerator of the first rate with the denominator of the second rate. 0.28 = 21. Now we have to find what makes 21 with 1. 1 x 21 = 21. So our answer is Emma saved 21 dollars from getting 75 dollars.

Part 3 :
3 ways are :
  • 1. Multiplying the numerator or the denominator from the first proportion with the opposite place of the fraction of the 2nd proportion. 1a) Find a way to make the unknown number the answer of the first part by multiplying the leftover number to make the answer.
  • 2. Dividing the 1st proportion's numerator to make the denominator. Then dividing by the same amount with the 2nd proportion, coming up with the answer.
  • 3. Multiplying the first proportion with a number to make the answer.

    e.g.

Part 5 :

1.Does this seem fair?
Not at all.

2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above.  Does it seem just and fair?

No. It's stupid. Why would they put the person for only 3 years, while a homeless man gets 15 years for stealing only 100.

3. Why have you made this choice?

There's a huge difference between 100 dollars and 3 billion dollars. That's like giving a year for every billion you steal. If they did, then the homeless man would only get 500 millionth of a year.

What would you have done if you were the judge?Let the homeless man do community service, it's a homeless man, what do you expect from a man trying to live without money?
I would also sentence the CEO for 30 years in prison.

How tall are the trees?
I googled the average height for an average 12 year old boy, because the person walking through the woods looks like one. The answer is 4 feet and 11 inches. It looks like the boy fits in the tree's height 3 times. So, 4 x 3 = 12, and 11 x 3 = 33. So it's 12 feet and 33 inches. Since there are 2 twelves in 33, the answer is :

14 feet and 9 inches.

  1. His set up was very good. His definitions were short but were to the point. His answers were good also. He should have spent more time on Part 3 and Part 5.
