9.3 Questions from the textbook (7, 10, 13, 16)
7. Evaluate each equation using the given value:
a) y = 5x - 3 when x = 6
This question means that you will multiply 6 by 5 and then subtract 3 to get your answer of 27.
y = 5x - 3
y = 5 (6) - 3
y = 5 x 6 - 3
y = 30 - 3
y = 27
b) y = x - 8 when x = 5
This question means that you will always subtract 8 from x because that's how you will know the next term. In this case, x is 5, so 5 subtract 8 is -3.
y = x - 8
y = 5 - 8
y = -3
c) y = -5x when x = -2
This question means that you will multiply -5 to whatever number x is. In this case, x is -2, so -5 multiplied -2 is 10. Because, if you know your integers well, if two numbers is negative and you multiply them together it will always equal a positive.
y = -5x
y = -5 (-2)
y = 10
d) y = x when y = 25
This question means that since y = 25 then, x = 25 also because y and x equal each other.

Yes, I think it is reasonable to assume that there are points between the values because it doesn't say in the question that says you can't. Numbers with decimal can be also be a linear relation also.
16. The graph shows Nigel's monthly earnings.

a) If Nigel doesn't make any sales, what are his monthly earnings?
It would be $1200 because in the graph it clearly states that if he makes 0 sales, then he would earn $1200.
b) Nigel has sales of $4000 in one month. How much does he earn?
He would earn $1400 that month because in the graph on x axis you would go to four and see where the coordinate would land.
c) Nigel earns $1500 in a month. What are his sales?
His sales would be $6000 because even though it doesn't have the point on the graph, you know that it has a linear relation and that linear relations always have to be in a line, so that's why the answer is $6000.

3 Questions from the Subtracting/Removing Integers Worksheet. (First column)
Question 1: (-7) - (-4)
Owe 7 remove Owe 4.
Standard Form: -7 - (-4) = -3
Take out the brackets, but leave the brackets in the -4, because it separates the subtraction sign from the negative sign.

Jalaire's Pay it Forward
Part 1 - What is Pay it Forward?
What was your Pay it Forward act of kindness?
My Pay it Forward act of kindess was give give goodie bags to the Children's Hospital Foundation to give it to the kids that were sick. We also donated $5 in the Children's Hospital Foundation donation box. We bought a key chain at a little gift shop close by and the money they got goes to the Children's Hospital Research Foundation.
Why did you choose this activity?
I chose this activity because, I know how sad I would've been if all I did all day was to lay down on a bed do nothing. I would've been happy if someone took their time and effort to prepare stuff for me.
Who did you help?
I helped kids at hospital who are sick and maybe lonely and hopefully made them smile by the stuff I've prepared for them.
What did you do?
I made and bought goodie bags to give to the Children's Hospital Foundation. I put chocolates, small toys, erasers, pencils, notepads, and candies!
When did you do this act of kindness?
I did this act of kindness on November 30th at about 12:00 pm to 12:40 pm with Gabbey and Bethel.

Part 3
How did your act of kindness go?
It went really well. The people at the Children's Hospital Foundation were really nice. I think that what we did made a kid happy and smile and made a difference because of this.
What happened?
Our act of kindness took about 3 days to complete. We started off by going to Dollarama on November 26 after school and buying all the treats we were going to put in the bags. On the 28th of November we went to Bethel's house to organize the treats that took us about 2 and a half hours to do. Before we started we contacted the Children's Hospital Foundation and left a message saying that we will drop off goodie bags on November 30th at lunch.We made 16 goodie bags, 8 for guys and 8 for girls. Each bag had a card, on the card we put encouraging quotes and greeting them an early Christmas. On November 29th we got a call back from Tonia, she's a person who works at the Foundation. She asked questions about the stuff we put in the bags and asked if we knew how to get there. The next day, November 30th at 11:50 we left the school and drove off to the hospital. When we got there, Tonia greeted us and we gave the stuff. She asked us about our project, "Pay it Forward" and we explained what it was. Before we left she asked if she could take a picture of us, so that they could put it on their Facebook page and spread the word about Pay it Forward, so that other people can get inspired too. Before we left, we donated $5 in the donation box. Then we went to a gift shop and bought a keychain. The money they from there, they give it to the Children's Hospital Research Foundation. After we took photos and then we were almost late for school.
How did you feel?
I felt amazing! Just imagine, by a simple deed you can make a change. Making a child smile is probably the best feeling you can ever get. Though we weren't able to see their faces when they receive it, we know that we made a difference and made them smile.
How did the person/people feel?
While we were there, we knew that the people there were very thankful. Tonia thanked us a lot. She was saying that what we were doing is very inspirational. She was really happy and thankful. Hopefully the children felt the same.
Did you ask the person or people to "Pay it Forward"?
No we didn't, but we did explain what Pay it Forward was. Hopefully they thought about it though. But, on the caption they put on their Facebook page they explained what we did and hopefully inspired the people who read it, to do the same.
Part 4
Why is the idea "Pay it Forward" important?
I think Pay it Forward is important because it teaches a lesson to people that not everything is easy to get and we shouldn't just think of ourselves, instead we should help out others and asking for nothing in return but, instead for them to Pay it Forward.
Has your act of kindness made a difference?
Yes, I think my act of kindness has made a difference though, it didn't make a BIG difference, it still made some action. We made the a difference by donating money and giving goodie bags to sick children in the hospital and made them smile and joyful by this small act.
By ending this; how about Paying it Forward? It starts with you. Do a small act of kindness, who knows, maybe instead of making a small difference it makes a big one.
Pay it Forward is a movie that all of the grade 8's watched, together. The movie was about a boy in grade 7 named Trevor. It was the first day of school, Trevor had Social Studies. They had a new teacher, he gave them an assignment to do for the whole school year. The project was to think of an idea to change the world, and put that idea into action. When it was Trevor's turn to present his idea was called, "Pay it Forward." It's a chain of action that started with him doing a good deed to three people and asking nothing in return. From there, the three people pay it forward to another 3 people and the chain continues. Trevor had no idea how big his idea got, it spread throughout the United States. He didn't get to see his success. So, we the grade 8's will continue to spread out his idea, Pay it Forward.

Jalaire's Fraction Scribepost
Today in class we learned how to solve dividing fraction statements, how to model them, put them on a number line and 3 ways we can rewrite the fraction statements.
3 ways we can rewrite 6 ÷ 1/2:



How to divide fractions:
You can solve dividing fraction statements in 3 ways too.
The second way you can solve it is by making the second fraction a whole by multiplying it by a reciprocal which gives you a product of 1. Then take that fraction and multiply with the other fraction.
How do you model 9 ÷ 1/3? You can model it by making 9 squares and splitting into thirds. After doing that you can count how many squares there are or you can multiply 9 by 3 which gives you 27.
You have to share 1/2 between 2 groups. You have a 1/2 and you need to half the half and get 1/4 as seen in the picture
Another way you can solve this is making the second fraction a reciprocal and taking 1/2 and multiply it by 1/2 and you'd get 1/4.

Question 6: In computer terminology, a bit is 1/8 of a byte. How many equal 16 bytes?
I got this question wrong because I multiplied 1/8 by 16 and I got the answer of 2. Instead I should've divided 1/8 by 16 to get the answer of 128 bits.

Jalaire's We Day Experience
Just before the night of We Day, I knew my perspective of the world will change. Then finally as I was getting ready to go to We Day, my excitement was overwhelming. When we arrived at the MTS centre the first thing that came to my mind was Spencer West. The person I’ve always been wanting to see ever since I got to have the opportunity to participate in We Day. Finally, it was about to start; counting down from 10. Then it began, I was already amazed of how many people were at We Day. I was most excited to see al the performances and hear the speeches. Yelled at the top of my lungs for most part of it, and stayed calm and listened to the speeches carefully. I've learned so much things about We Day and what people experienced. Some were touching and some were inspirational. All different and unique.
Having to experience We Day live and hearing all the inspirational speakers literally convinced me in taking part in the event that will happen all year long. From the very first speaker to the last inspired me to not only take action, but to spread the word to everyone in my community. Though, many people didn’t see it live and didn’t have the same feeling I had, I can share all I learned and inspire them instead. 18 000 students got to attend and if everyone shared their feelings to their community, we can and will make a change, not only in our community but for sure globally.

Every single speaker who came up on the stage and shared their experiences impacted me to take action and make a change. One of those people was Molly Burke.

One Drop
All of the performers were ecstatic! From the singers to the dancers to even the rope dancer. One of the performers that stood out to me was Victor Duffield. I knew her from the Next Star. I never even would’ve imagined she’d get so big; from one little audition to being a huge superstar. Her dancing and singing got me on my toes, it was so lively and was very overwhelming. Another performance I loved was by Taylor Shaw. From a guy just entering coca cola covers contest and now being known across Canada is just amazing! His voice was angelic, it was nice to hear. So smooth and the lyrics were very meaningful. He has really great guitar skills and I’m glad I’ve got to hear him live. All the performers were awesome, but from my opinion these two stood out to me the most.

Been 5 years since this event started, and it is already been so successful. They've announced that We Day will not only be in Canada but it will go around the world. This has been great success. More people that know about this, more chances of making bigger differences around the world.

Law of Will: "Never Retreat, Never Explain and Never Apologize" -Nellie McClung. Everyone has a right.
Law of We:
We can make a change if we do it all together, nothing is impossible if we give it are all and never give up.
Giving a little act of kindness can be a big change to someone in need. The change starts with us. We can make a difference, but we will need a handful of people to help us start that change. Just because we're still in our youth doesn't mean we can't step up and make a difference. We are the generation to make the world a better place. So take a chance and step up and make a difference.

No, I dont think it is fair.
2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair?
No, I still don't it's fair.
3. Why have you made this choice?
Because the homeless guy got sentenced for 15 years in jail for just stealing $100, but then turned his self in the next for being guilty. As when the other guy gets sentenced for only 4o months when he stole $3 billion.
4.What would you have done if you were the judge?
If I were the judge, I would've sentenced the homeless guy for only 1-2 months. As for the other guy I would've sentenced him for more than 15 years in jail. Or I would reduced if he returned the money back which he probably didn't.
Bonus question:

How much taller is the trees from the guy walking?
An average kid that is about 14 years old is about 5'6 ft. So, 3 kids his height stacked up on each other will equal the height of the tree. When I figured that out, I multiplied 5'6 by 3 and got the answer of 16'8 ft. tall. So, the trees are about 11.2 ft. taller than the kid walking.
