Definitions
Coefficient - The number that is placed before and multiplied by the variable.
e.g. 2x+4=10
Constant - A quantity that does not change its value.
e.g. 2x+4=10
Variable - A letter or symbol that is used to represent a number.
e.g. 2x+4=10
2 step multiply
3x+4=10
The first thing you do is isolate the variable. To isolate the variable you need to make a zero pair for the constant.
3x+4-4=10-4
After you isolate the variable you balance it, by dividing both sides by the coefficient and after that you simplify it.
3x=6
3 3
x=2
Once you've find the solution, you verify by first rewriting the question.
3x+4=10
Then you change the variable to the solution and multiply. In this case the solution is 2 and you multiply the coefficient (3) to 2.
3(2)+4=10
After you multiply you add the coefficient to the constant..
6+4=10
And you got your answer.
10=10
2 step divide
x+5=8
2
First you isolate the variable like when you do multiplication by making a zero pair for your constant.
x+5-5=8-5
2
After you isolate the variable you balance it, by multiplying both sides by 2.
(2)x=3(2)
2
x=6
Now you verify, by rewriting the question.
x+5=8
2
Substitute or change the variable to the solution.
6+5=8
2
Now you divide the coefficient.
3+5=8
And that's how you to 2 step divide.
8=8
Distribute
2(g+4)=-8
To distribute you first multiply the coefficient to the constant and variable
2(g+4)=-8
g+4
g+4
and you get.
2g+8=-8
Now you find the solution, by doing the 2 step multiply.
2g+8=-8
2g+8-8=-8-8
2g=-16
2 2
g=-8
Now you verify by doing the 2 step multiply.
2g+8=-8
2(-8)+8=-8
-16+8=-8
-8=-8
And that's how you distribute. I hope you learned about something in this blog.
