Rina's Proportion Post

Rate: A comparison of two quantities that have different units of measure.
EG. 24 m/h

Ratio: A comparison of two quantities that have the same measure.
EG. 3:6

Proportion: An equation which states that two ratios are equal.
EG. 3/6 = 6/12

Part 2

1. 5 hours to travel 360 kilometres is 72km/h. (360/5 = 72/1) (5 divided by 5 equals 1. 360 divided by 5 equals 72)

2. Emma saves 28 cents of every dollar that she earns.  Emma earned $75 last week.  How much money did Emma save last week?
0.28 x $75 = 21

Part 3
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?

3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 = 16/32

1. You do the calculation by multiplying
2. You can do it by dividing.
3. You can use your times table.

1. Does this seem fair?
- No, it doesn't seem fair.
2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above.  Does it seem just and fair?
- It does not look just and fair.
3. Why have you made this choice?
- I have made this choice because stealing $100 or anything lower to be in jail for 15 years isn't fair. It is an easy $100 bill.
4. What would you have done if you were the judge?
- If I were the judge, I would let him go because 15 years in jail for just an easy $100 bill could just be thrown away if we aren't talking about a million dollars. 15 years is too much for a low amount of money. 15 years could be the minimum or maximum of years of murdering someone.

PROPORTION:
QUESTION:
This woodpile is stacked with about 15 logs about 3 feet high. If the woodpile was 30 feet high, how many logs would there be?

ANSWER:
3/15 = ?/30

15x2= 30 so..
3x2=6

3/15 = 6/30

There would be 6 logs stacked which would be 30 feet high.
